help with subtitles

Hello everyone.

I have been trying to add subtitles but it hasen't been so easy, since i try to convert an anime movie, i want it with japanese sounds and english subtitles. But as i understand it I have to have the *.avi file and the subtitle file separated. Is there any way to make this file into one, and what programs will I need.

I hope I can get any help.
