Removing subtitles

Could anyone please tell me how to remove subtitles from an .AVI file?

You can't do that, the image data behind the subs is gone.

The only way to remove them would be to chop away the part of the image where the subs appear, but to do this you have to recompress the entire thing in virtualdub, which would also degrade the image quality.
