any downloads to test mp4 encodes on a stand alone player

that's the point .. I'm after something like the DivX test cd iso that can be downloaded ... even just a bunch of different encodes that are identified as to what they are so I can find out what this thing is capable of

Doesn't your player come with a manual ? It should be stated there about the compatible formats. What is the model name and number ?

I've seen H.264 test CDs around (but can't remember the link to it now), but that could be useless if your player doesn't even support H.264 (and most don't).

Note that there is a difference between MPEG-4 and MP4. MPEG-4 refers to MPEG-4 ASP (eg. DivX/XviD) and MPEG-4 AVC (H.264).

MP4 on the other hand, is a container format (like AVI or MKV), so theoretically, you can use any codec with it.

Without knowing anything about your player, I can only guess that it is similar to the majority of MPEG-4 supporting players out there, and that would include support for DivX/XviD and MPEG-4 Simple Profile, with VBR MP3. Older players won't support the GMC or QPEL features of MPEG-4/DivX/XviD, and obviously, everything has to be DVD resolution or lower.

Like paglamon posted, if you give us the brand/model number of the player, there should be information available online that will determine what kind of files it will support.

Yes.Most players use the term mp4 very loosely,when,they mean to say mpeg4 instead. I assume zaphod has one of these players which actually do not support mp4 but supports mpeg4 ASP in avi.
