Can't play Divx-encoded AVIs in Mac OS X

Does anyone know about a problem with Divx-encoded AVIs playing back in Mac OS 10.2 (Quicktime 6.0.1) as a bunch of garbled diagonal green, red, and yellow lines?

The problem happens whether I run the file through the Divx Validator application or not.

I'm really stumped, here...

What Mac are you using?

I play divx movies back on my TiPB 800 using QT 6.02 with divx 5.02 and no problems.

New iMac... actually, I've found a way to play them (with a player called VideoLAN client), although I'd still like to use the standard Quicktime player.
