    Slow performance with certain DivX files

    Recently I used VirtualDub to encode an AVI file (made with a Sony DVR and DVGate Motion) into DivX format according to the guides I found on this site. However, with the new DivX file, playback is extremely slow and choppy, even when I have around 100Mb of free RAM at the time of playing the file. I have to reboot my computer for the file to run smoothly.

    The funny thing is, I have no such problem playing the large DivX files (which are around 10-20 times the size of my problem file) of movies I downloaded from other sources. These play smoothly with no problems at all. My problem seems to apply only to files I encode from AVI files made with Sony DVR/DVGate motion.

      If it runs smoothly after rebooting, be happy! Sounds like, when you've first attempted to run the file (apparently during the same session you created it), you were probably running low on resources.

          Well, my point is that I have around 100Mb free RAM at the time I play the files I made with the DVR/DVGate and it is still choppy. But I never have any problem with the big DivX movie files. I only have problems with the files made with DVR/DVGate.

              RAM and resources are two different things...

                  yes, thank you, setarip. what other "resources" will I need in your experienced view? my CPU is also running at less than 10% at that time. I have a P3-850MhZ Intel processor. my problem is, I can run 600Mb DivX files with no problem, but everytime I run a 10Mb file made with the above, it is slow and choppy. is there something peculiar with AVI files made with DVRs?

                      That establishes that your system resources aren't running low at the time. Therefore, I'd ask you which video and audio codecs (and what settings) you're selecting under VDub.
