ok SKD_Tech theirs a difference between the word format and extension.

now if i said file exstention then that would mean .DIV3, but i said format. format means the software it was encoded with.

can someone else please help me.

i know its DIvX, i just dont know why it wont play.

sorry for the nasty reply SKD but everytime you replie to one of my post you dont help wit jack ****.

        "Unknown file format (DIV3)"

This file SHOULD open with the DivX v.3.11alpha codec. As an experiment, try uninstalling both the 5.02 and 3.11 codecs and then reinstall ONLY the 3.11 codec.

            I have the same problem...

Only had problems with some "Space above and beyond" episodes yet, but it's annoying and i really want to see those episodes!

            Tried many different aproaches..
            *Uninstalling all codecs
            *ffdshow
            *3ivx
            *DivX3.11a
            *Divx503
            *tsunami codec pack
            (think i've tried ace too)
*tried to change the fourcc information

No luck yet, but I won't give up yet.

I use DirectX 9 and nvida detonator 43.35 drivers (bit unsure if they might cause the problem seeing it's the outputfield that gives error in GSPOT)...

After reading some other posts i've got a suspicion.... might it be ffdshow that's couseing the distress?

Will try uninstalling it later tonight.
After following UmcasMS's advise about filter settings in thread:

make sure that ffdshow is actually the playback filter
(like i proposed in that posting you link to)

uninstalling a major codec like divx5 wouldnt be a good choice imho or will you go and install/uninstall any other codec every now and then whenever you want to play on of those files?

check ffdshow, go to codecs and tick divx3, divx5 and xvid in order to make ffdshow take over the playback for those formats.

ffdshow is the best solution from my p-o-v.

                    status report #3

                    Mission: field testing of ffdshow

Test subject (me) accessed the ffdshow settings by means of loading a divx file in bsplayer, opening the menu, then press other menu and going for the properties->ffdshow video decoder.
In aforementioned settings the test subject observed that ffdshow was set as primary codec for ALL video compression types. The test subject then showed initiative to turn of the ffdshow codec handling, and let 3vix have a go.

                    Outcome: negative...

Conclusion: The test subject was forced to reactivate ffdshow as primary codec for all video compression types, and is presently awaiting new orders.

which codec are we dealing with in your case?

can you provide a gspot as well as virtualdub screenshot?

                        i have maybe a hint...

if u've got a damaged or partialy downloaded Avi-File, bsplayer claims that div3 or the used codec wouldn't have been found...

Mission: Capture screenshots of avi file in GSPOT and virtualdub

Test subject downloaded virtual dub 1.5.1 and loaded one of the avi files in question into this program. Program responded by "Reconstructing missing index block" whereafter the file would play successfully within virtual dub. The same outcome followed the loading of all the avi files in question. This came as a surprise since all the files was downloaded within different rar archives, with correct checksum - something that indicates correctness of files.

                          Outcome: partly successfull

Conclusion: Test subject still does not believe the files have been corrupted. The files are likely to be salvageable.
                          Awaiting new orders.

having laoded the file(s) into vd, did you try saving it to a new file - make sure to use direct stream for both: audio + video
