this ac3 filter lets you change the sound volume:

access the ac3 filter options during playback of your file (by rightclick or another player option)

in the MAIN tab you could increase MASTER
moreover, you could activate the EQUALIZER

but what if it is MP3??

I have the same problem with some movies. Although I've already put the volume to a maximum within the software, in the Windows Mixer and on my hardware (Speakers + Stereo) you still have to be completely quiet to understand one damn word.

just wanted to add, that also some DVDs are not really loud. It's enough to watch them, but I couldn't really burst up the volume.

Why is the sound on DVDs that low anyway?? I've tried DVDs on several DVD-Players Philips, Panasonic and on every one you had to set the TV-volume almost up to 100 %. Whereas normal TV needs only 40 to 50 %.

i've got the same problem. i'm using wmp 9 and AC3Filter ver 0.70b. avi files with ac3 sound track playback with the volume way too low and changing the settings in the filter configuration doesn't help.

what about mp3 audio? i know you can open it up in vritualdub and reenc it with a higher volume but if the file is damaged in part i get an error message. tried encoding the audio seperately but it doesnt always work.

the orig file plays back fine, just with very low sound.

                  - demux your mp3
                  - use MP3Gain to normalize (it doesn't decrease the mp3 quality)
                  - re-mux

It would be helpful to search for a realtime compression directshow sound filter.. If anybody knows..

doesnt work. i cant save the audio by itself since i get an error in vdub. that's why i tried using tmpegenc to encode the audio by itself. it does encode but most of the audio is just noise. if i play the avi then the sound is fine, just too low.

looks like only thing that'll work is a filter to boost the audio

"i cant save the audio by itself since i get an error in vdub"

What is the EXACT wording of the error message?

What version of VirtualDub or VirtualDub hacks are you using?

oh god i dont believe it. i just did the exact same thing as before and no error message this time.

i saved the audio and can now increase volume as i want.

would still be nice to have a filter that can boost audio tho

I use to have the exact same problem. I couldn't just turn the volume up either due to some sort of weird underlying static that occurs ALL the time, even when I'm <literally> doing nothing. Very annoying.

                          Try TFM Audio Filter
Download the TFM Audio Filter, a dynamic range compressor filter

That should be what your looking for. I could turn up the audio without having to turn up the volume on my speakers.

Now if I can just figure out what's causing this static...

blah blah been there done that.

windows sounds in general cannot agree on anything.
I was so annoyed about the windows sounds being so much louder than music or movies, I REMOVED sound events from windows.

No more unexpected Blasts. Oh, I also now have a manual volume control attenuator in the event that it needs squelching fast.

Oh, I got rid of the static 2 ways: replacing my onboard sound with Soundblaster Audigy card -AND- grounding my computer case directly to my AMP. No more Hum or Rattle and no more software fiddles.

Government throws more money at a problem, so it looks like they are making a difference.
