    Audio Codec problems

i have these two video files (avi extension) that do not have sound. i used to have the OS ME on my computer, and i used a kristal studio codec that allowed me to have sound on those files. i recently upgraded to XP, and when i tried to install the codec again (i had problems installing XP and had to reformat, losing most everything), i got an error saying that the file was not really compatible with XP. i went ahead anyway, and all my video files turned green - no action, no other colors - just green. i have tried other codecs, but none of them work. is there a special codec someone could send me, or that i should look out for? i really want to play my files!!

can you try and find out what codec you might need for these files(via rightclick)?

how? all i know is that i don't get sound. when i put the file through Real Player, it just told me that there was no sound due to a missing codec. i've used the newest kristal studio codec, but that screws up my videos when i install it. i don't know how else to check for what kind of codec i need or anything

Speak until the tape runs out. Playback the tape until the story is finished...

via right click what? it doesn't tell me anything when i do that. it always says audio codec, nothing more than that. i've tried several audio codecs and none of them work without turning all of my video files green. so i don't see how right clicking will help me find out what file i need, unless i'm doing something wrong

In Explorer, rightclick on the filename, select "Properties", click on the "Details" tab. You'll see descriptive information about both the video and audio codecs used to create the .AVI file.

              audio:
              bit rate - 16 kbps
audio sample size - 16 bit
audio format - windows media audio V2

              video:
              frame rate - 29 frames/second
              data rate - 107 kbps
video sample size - 24 bit
              video compression - divx codec

this is the only info, besides image width and height, that i can find when i look under the properties tab. i've done this before, but like i said, i didn't think any of this info was very helpful. but then, i'm no divx expert either

Einfach das passende Codec für "windows media audio V2" runterladen und installieren. Könnte sein, daß es beim neusten Windows-Mediaplayer schon integriert ist. Ansonsten ist es in diesem Filter-Pack:

You need to install the original DivX v.3.11 alpha codec, which includes the audio format you've indicated.

                    3.11 is the answer

There's nothing stupid about "learning something new every day". The only thing "stupid" would be not seeking information from those who already have it.

                        Glad to have helped ;>}
