Are you talking about the same computer system or different ones, chickeneater? There is no way a computer with the proper codec installed to be able to play a DivX file on its HD and yet not on its CD drive. Well...provided the CD is not damaged in some subtle, but fatal way.

As Enchanter mentioned, your drive may be damaged. If your cd drive supports DMA, you should enable that option. Does this issue arise when you playback all your divx movies?

the cd drive works with other programs, so dont worry about that.
the cd that i have is burned, and has a working master, i saw it myself. no scratches. i have played other movies, and they work fine. the computer isnt in the best shape, old and slow. but it can play movies, i have tried to get " the playa" from divx.com but it only downloaded 70% (slow modem to) and the program wont open, several downloads, all 70% downloaded, wont open if i force it. hypothetically speaking. my friend can play other movies on his wmp and real player. ??? . i tried this SMR patch, but that didnt work. help. the same computer for me. maybe a decompression thing for real player, because it said that it was lacking proer video compression stuff.
        help.
        thanks

Follow Setarip's post. Also, you may consider installing a codec pack. For incomplete downloads I use Download Accelerator from download.com DAP allows you to resume cancelled downloads later on.

Realplayer does not recognize or properly playback the vast majority of divx files---that's my experience. I prefer WMP 6.4, GDIVX, Yahooplayer.

when i open virtualdub with the movie, it says there was an error opening it without the proper decompressor. maybe it is an error with windows 98 se? i am downloading wmp 7.1, will that work?, does it have the right decompressor?and where would i get a codec pak, because i already have gdivx
            thanks, help

I'm going to agree with setarip that you probably are missing a codec, however I don't think anyone has asked if this is actually an .avi file that's on the cd. I'm just double checking cause I have heard .mpg, .asf, .wmv, etc reffered to as divx files (even though this is not accurate). I'm also asking because my brother had a similiar problem, he had gotten all of his divx codecs from me, and was wondering why he was only getting audio with a file, turned out it was a .wmv file, and he just needed the microsoft codecs. As for your choice of players, if you have a slow comp (I do too) I recommend either wmp 6.4 (don't use 7.1 it's hell on slow systems), or gdivx. These are your best bets.

                good luck

it is a .avi file, and the master cd worked, perfectly fine, and, if you were wondering, after one hour 37 minutes, wmp 7.1 doesnt work with win 98... it was downloeaded on a different computer, and worked, on a cd. mine is on a cd too,

when i open the file vith virtualdub, it says that it cant locate the proper decompressor, DIVX format, and the file menu is just the same as i opened it, it didnt change, including the grayed out file information.

i have finally downloaded a complete codec with the player too. all of the players that didnt work, now they do. i seem to like windows media player 6.4 the best.
thanks for all of your help :-þ
