What codec should I use?

use Vdub to cut a small 2-3 minute section of the video. Use the 2-3 min cut and experiment with different encoder/filter settings to see the difference and what you like. You can also try different programs on the cut video. This will save encoding time and give you samples to watch and see what you like.
