I'm trying to convert an avi to mpeg2/dvd. When I encode, it has lots of options for mpeg2. one of them is "search method" with a slider bar that moves from "fast" to "exact." "fast" is 0, and "exact" is 15. Currently, its set at 8. And then it has "search range" with a slider bar that moves from "short" (1) to "wide" (31). Its currently set at 23.
My questions are:
What are these options for? What to they do?
What is the difference between "search method" and "search range"
What should they be set at for the highest and smoothest resolution?
The reason I ask is because my output mpg file has much worse resolution than the original avi. It's really grainy and look "pixelly". I think these options have something to do with it. I tried putting them both all the way to "exact" and "wide." But my mpg was STILL grainy and pixelly. Is there a setting that's just right?
As far as my other options go, I have
720:480 (I cropped it to display 16:9 on a 4:3 screen)
Line filtering disabled
2-pass disabled
Frame rate 29.97
Encoding bottom field first
no deinterlacing
mpeg settings:
i-frames = 15
auto GOP = none
P-frames = 3
closed GOP interval = 0
bitrate = 6000 CBR
rate control = 1
enabled half-pel search
noise sensitivity = 5
MOTION SEARCH MODE = 8 [out of 15] (does this have to do with it too?)
disable quant matrices
disable MOTION SEARCH PIXEL MOVEMENT**
audio = mpeg layer 2 160 kbps
multiplexing = mpeg2 VBR
startup delays: pack = 0, video = 180, audio = 180
video options: buffer = 0, timestamps = allstamps
enabled write program end code
My mpg file comes auto to be 4.3 gig, which I can split and make vob's for a dvd. But the quality is really bad.
I put all the info on there so if I'm doing something wrong, you can tell me exactly what to change.
**Last I checked, a 4.2 gig mpg/dvd file isn't supposed to be of lesser quality than a 700mb avi.
