Here is a sample of avi which Mediainfo says is progressive. But, when I play it(both on PC and TV) I can see the typical "comb lines" of interlaced video ? Can anyone comment on this ? test.rar
In Media Player Classic ? Do you have FFDSHOW configured for deinterlacing? Here is a screenshot of what I am getting.
@Chewy, advance the video frame by frame and you should get the lines.Look for lines around moving things e.g. the lips or the turning head.
I want to know whether this avi is progressive or interlaced or telecined.
In MPC, which filter is decoding the video? As I said earlier, maybe FFDSHOW has been configured to deinterlace. Please open the file in VirtualdubMPEG2 or VirtualdubMod and go to frame 150 or frame 151 and you ought to see the interlacing lines.(Zoom to 200% to be sure).
Sorry to disagree Chewy. There are plenty of frames showing those lines(at the areas which are moving),but not as much as in frames 150,151.Anyway,what does this mean? Is this progressive or interlaced ?Had it been interlaced, then, all frames would have shown the lines.Does this mean this is telecined ?
I'm seeing the interlacing during the camera cut aways, during playback (in ffdshow) and also in VirtualDub. It could be just that the video was encoded as progressive, but with the interlacing artifacts hard encoded into the video.
Nero Showtime(by default) has adaptive deinterlacing ON. Is it so in your case ?

Yes. This is probably the case. So,should I deinterlace it for viewing on TV( the Progressive Scan in my DVD player is not helping) ?This will result in quality loss(due to re-encoding).Or,should I just accept those lines ?

The problem is that your source is not really interlaced, it just has interlacing artifacts). I don't know how effective the de-interlacing process will be, but it might be worth a try on a small clip just to see what will happen.
If it was me, I would probably just accept those lines.
I tried the Deinterlace filter in Virtualdub. The filtered output was surely looking better. But I am doubtful about the final result once I re-encode the already compressed(DivX) avi. Yes, I will try it on the small clip that I attached and see what happens. Thank you Chewy and Admin for staying with me.
