    Changin Sound bit rate

I have a file (avi file) that plays on my computer, but on my stand alone DVD player the picture is fine, but I don't get sound. The player says something like "Unsupported audio". [I know. Its is a crummy, el cheapo player].

    GSpot tells:

    ----- End GSpot ----

My hunch is that the problem is

    Audio Bitrate(kbps): 142
Audio Bitrate Type ("CBR" or "VBR"): VBR

Another film wit 128 kbps and C(onst)BR plays fine.

    Is this hunch correct?

What would be the main problem? The (unusual) bit rate or the VBR?

What is the easiest way to recode (only) the sound?

    Thanks.

Does your player support MP3 for audio playback? VBR is standard video encoding. 142kbps for audio is unusual, I'll grant you that but it should not be a show stopper.

It is. But VBR audio in AVI is sometimes a bit dicey for some players.
Try re-encoding the audio as CBR and see if that plays OK.

That's what I thought I did. I used the GSpot scripting option, using the standard GSpot/ExportFormat.txt.

What should I do to get the output like your sample?

The player does play another divx film with 128 kbps CBR MP3 and also one with 145 kbps V(!)BR.

Strange! VBR, but also not a standard bit rate.

          I'm really getting confused!

It is a crummy no-brand DVD player!

Is there an easy way to convert the audio?

            I missspelled mediainfo
            google it

problem I have found is some avi's are full of errors

vbr may be better in allowing quality to be focused where it's needed but it would seem to be a lot trickier to encode

            cbr is easier

don't waste time on a bad avi

As Chewy suggested, please post info using Mediainfo.
From Gspot info it is not clear whether ur avi has GMC and QPEL enabled or not. Most standalones do not support GMC and QPEL.

I used GSpot because it got recommended in the sticky thread "No sound or no video? Read this first!"

Maybe this post should be changed?

I'll post the Mediainfo results tomorrow. I'ts midnight here. Goodnight.

Nothing against GSpot. It gives info about the codecs, whether they are installed or not, whether you will be able to play your file in your PC or not. But Mediainfo is better at giving detailed info about any particular file

Her is the output from Mediainfo as promised.

1st film gives problems. 2nd and 3rd one are o.k.

I'm really confused why the 1st film doesn't have sound and the 2nd does.

I hope someone els can shed some light on this.

                    Thanks a lot!
