Need Advice 4 Codec Setup On New PC

    Greetings,

I'm looking for a good start on setting up codecs on a new PC. I've been messing around with ripping and converting, VirtualdubMod, and codecs, etc. since before my join date, so I'm not exactly a newbie. However, it took years of trial and error and headaches to get everything squared away on my old PC. I'm not only concerned with playback (decoding) but also encoding using vdubmod or TmpegEnc, or whatever it's called.

I have a new PC and Windows MCE installation with the usual limited codecs, and I installed the latest FFDshow for playing back most, but not all, of my AVI collection. So far, so good with playing back most files using WMP and Nero Showtime.

I guess what I want to know is, how do you think I should proceed? It's so easy to muddy things up. So, if you were starting with nothing but FFDshow and new windows install, how would you build it all up again so you can playback most every AVI's, watch MP4 - H.264 (not wanting to encode H.264 yet) And I want to encode DivX and/or Xvid Avi's using Vdubmod.

At the same time, I have a HDTV tuner and hoping I won't screw something up with that because it came with codecs too.

With all the versions of xvid, divx, media players, lions, tigers, and bears, oh my!

Where's a good place to start making things work right? Is there a guide and links to files for building this up from nothing? I'm hoping to do better than last time when it took me 3-4 years to get it all straight.
