    mkv H.264 on PS3?

Can I change a mkv h.264 to mp4 without having to reprosses it or compress it again if its already a h.264 video file?

The H.264 file would have to be PS3 compatible first though, so even if you get it into the MP4 container, it might still not work (but it's worth a try).

The PS3 doesn't support MP4 as well as it should so some people prefer a workaround, which wraps the H.264 file in a VOB container. This adds seeking support as well as AC3 5.1 audio support. The instructions for doing this (using a tool called mkv2vob) can be found here:

This guide shows you how to convert DVD/AVI/DivX/XviD/MOV files to a PS3 compatible H.264 file that can uses AAC or AC3 5.1 audio, covering 3 methods for making MP4, VOB or a M2TS stream (page 8 of 10)

(just skip to the part where you already have your MKV file, about half way through the page)

Works great. The only complain I have is that if I add subs it gets hardsubbed but othenr than that its great it even cheks if the mkv needs to be transcoded or not and if its not it takes just a couple minutes and i can even stream them over to my ps3 through windows media server or tversity.

There's another set of instructions on that guide that I linked to for creating M2TS files, which the PS3 supports better than H.264 VOBs. You would need to use MKVExtractGUI to separate the streams and then use the instructions there (mainly tsMuxeR) to make the M2TS (you might not need to go through the H264info step, depending on how your H.264 stream was made). The advantage of M2TS is that it has no size limit and it also allows file seeking during playback, which the VOB method doesn't allow. TVersity also supports it, but as the guide mentions, you need to rename the file to .M2T

This is my preferred method for PS3 H.264 streaming now (via TVersity).

The subtitles thing is a bit of a mystery that I haven't had time to investigate yet. There are ways to get non hard-coded subtitles in, I think.

I used mkv2vob to make it a m2ts and stream it over windows media server and it works fine but i wish i could turn off the subs when i wanted to. if you find anything let me know ok.
