Can't Get Dvdshrink To Load On Win98se

    HI.
Ever since I got DVDSHRINK and decrypter, they always worked well on my win xp computer ,including shrinkto5.exe, but all never could work on the win98 computer. The 2 computers are almost the same other than their os. Both have 2 80gb hds each, 512mb ram, and both are pentium 4: the 98se is a 1.4ghz cpu while the xp is 2.4. My main and only question is how to run the dvdshrink on the 98se. The following error comes on the screen after its icon is checked:" DVDSHRINK encountered an error and canot continue. It failed to initiate ASPI device. The network request is not supported" I have tried at least 3 different Adaptec AsPI Drivers with the force installations. They all get installed 4.1, 4.6 and 4.7 but still no help getting dvdshrink to go. Viral scans, adware, spybots, trojans, and all other malware are scanned and definitions are updated daily. My version of dvdshrink is 3.2. I have even uninstalled it opimized, defraged, and reinstalled to no avail. Otherwise the computer runs perfectly. I also have other css decrypters and burning software such as iclickdvdcopy, xcopyxpress anydvd, however, both computers have these same programs. Of course they are off when trying to get dvdshrink to work on the win98se. Also, screensavers,AV, and all other programs are removed from memory when dvdshrink is tried on the 98se. I sure would appreciate any help or further advice you may have to help me remedy this nuissance.

    Thank you,

    Miles

PS. THE ERROR i AM GETTING WITH DVD Shrink ON THE WIN98SE COMPUTER IS:
FAILED TO INITIALIZE THE ASPI DEVICE. The aspichk shows that aspi is currently installed version 4.6 and the components installed are:
    winaspi32.dll and apix.vxd

    What do I do?
    Thanks...Help

For your Windows 98, try to download Nero ASPI driver for that particular windows system from Nero's link below:

Nero Platinum - 7 programmes en une suite ! ✓ Montage vidéo ✓ Streaming ✓ Sécurité des données ✓ Conversion ✓ Gravure ✓ Radio mondiale ► Plus d'informations

Hopefully it will fix your problem

Hi Miles, Read the instructions and download Force ASPI
I recommend using ForceASPI this way:

      * Run dumpASPI to backup your current ASPI layer
      * Run killASPI
      * Run instASPI to install the new ASPI layer
      * Reboot
      * Run aspichk or Nero Info Tool to see if everything worked OK

benbryant, Thank you very much for your note.
I DO NOT HAVE NERO ON THE WIN98SE COMPUTER. However, I downloaded the Nero Aspi driver and read its text file( 1 of the 3 files self extracted in the downloaded file) It says to load the dll file in the nero directory!! and the other, I think, the vxd in the windows\system\iobusys\ sub directory. I did this only, since I do not have Nero. Then I tried running dvdshrink and got the same error. Dvdshrink failed to initialize the aspi device!!! Thanks for any other ideas.

Hi Taelon and thank you for your help. However, in the past, I ran Force aspi from the command(dos) window and it did replace the aspi device 7.x with its own 6.x version, then verified by aspichk. However, no response or change in getting dvdshrink to initialize the new aspi driver. I did not perform this in the exact steps outlined in your note. Nevertheless, it still installed the proper aspi version device driver. Do you think I should repeat this, however, following your exact steps, or do you have any other thoughts? Again, thanks so much for your support in this problem, that's driving me crazy!! Especially, when Dvdshrink works so well in the win xp machine. I do realize that xp is alot more stable, sophisticated and needs no supplimentally installed Aspi device, etc.

I can assure you that DVD Shrink will work fine with Win98SE. It should interface directly with the ASPI layer. If you've verified the ASPI layer is installed correctly with ASPICheck or similar then something else must be interfereing. It should look like similar to the following image, if so there's no need to follow the procedure I listed earlier.

Download, install and run the Nero Info Tool then attach the log file to your message. Perhaps we can find the driver that is fighting for control of the bus.

Some of our members've had this kind of problem before and they suggested some of the reasonable fixes as the link below:

Sometimes, some suggestions don't sound logical. But they did work and it would cost anything to give them a try

                Taelon,
I followed the protocal for the forceaspi-1.7 ie. killing, dumping, installing ver. 4.60, then rebooting. I then, ran the Aspichk annd got the following results:

                    Taelon,
I just did what you asked for in your last note, however, this site would not accept the log as it was 38k! Mine was only 16k!! They told me to shorten it to 15k or it could not be posted. Being such a novice, I thought i would try and zip this with xtree for windows (not winzip, as I use it to open zip files only. I never tried using winzip to zip a file or files. In any event, my program created the enclosed info-too.zip (3k) I'm sure you can open it? (my first created windows file ever zipped by me!!! I used the attachment feature??
Again, I want to emphasize that the win98se computer plays all dvd movies, copies and decrypts alll movies with my other private programs, ( DVDXCOPY, and 1CLICKDVDCOPY using Anydvd) perfectly, as it is now. I'm just obsessed to try and learn why dVDSHRINK is having such a problem with the aspi initialization? Thanks so much for sticking with me and trying to rectify this quirk.
I hope this zip log has the answer.
Here it is as an attachment:

I really appreciate all your time and help,

Adapter 1, should be the Primary Controller, Adapter 2 should be the secondary. I'm not sure the best way to fix it.

Perhaps open Device Manager and look at the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. Make sure you've closed all running programs, then Uninstall both the Secondary and Primary controllers and reboot, but stop it and go into Safe Mode (F8), and do the same thing while in Safe Mode. Then reboot normally and windows should find the "new Hardware" and hopefully get it right this time.

                        Hi Taelon,
Could this be that physically the company that initially made this computer, set up the Ide controllers as follows: Primary motheboard ide is attached to hard drive 0ne as master and Plextor burner as slave? (My dvdshrink uses this as, it's the only burner on the win98 computer) And the second hard drive uses the 2nd motherboard ide as master with the dvd rom only drive (toshiba) attached as the slave, to the 2nd ide controller? Or do really mean this is a software problem in the way the computer is confusng the ide controller software? I can send you a device manager log of the IDE/ATAPI CONTROLLERS? AS I REMEMBER, AND CAN SEE INSIDE THE COMPUTER, THE TWO HARD DRIVES ARE SET UP TO IDE 1 AS MASTER AND SLAVE. tHE 2 DVD PLAYERS ARE SET UP THE SAME WAY ON IDE 2, MASTER AND SLAVE. BY THE WAY, ANYHOW, THAT SHOULD NOT BE A PROBLEM, SINCE ALL OTHER PROGRAMS WORK FINE THAT ADDRESS THESE BURNER AND DECRYPTOR ISSUES. IRONICALLY, THE 3 FREE PROGRAMS: DVDSHRINK, SHRINKTO5(REAL GOOD PROGRAM) AND DVDDECRYPTOR ALL CAN NOT WORK ON THE WIN98 MACHINE!!! They all work well on my XP. Have you tried Shrinkt05.exe yet?
It is an upgrade or 2nd generation dvdshrink, since the program was banned, that is so easy TO USE, with much better video duplication than my purchased programs. Let me know WHAT YOU THINK, and worst case scenario is I just forget using those 3 programs on the win98se and, when needed , use them on my xp. The Win98se works too well to radically change things that could affect its other functions, that work perfectly, over the stupid dvdshrink issue and aspi. I would accademically, however, love to understand what is going on, but not at the misery of A reinstallation of the win98se os!! Again, a special appreciation for all your work ANDTIME YOU HAVE SPENT with me.

                        Miles

PS. SED ME A BILL IF YOU THINK NECESSARY!!!!!

Miles, I understand that the other programs work for you, I'm just pointing out what appears to be a problem according to the Nero Info Tool log.
I can send you a device manager log of the IDE/ATAPI CONTROLLERS?
                          Sure that would be great.

I haven't tried ShrinkTo5 yet, I'm still a believer that DVDShrink is the best transcoder around and won't switch until someone can prove otherwise

                            HI again MILES E. STONE
It is totally strange to see the setup of your Interface Information: 2 hard drives with Secondary IDE Channel and 2 optical drives with Unknown Channel. So the question is how many IDE channels does your motherboard have? and where is the Primary IDE Channel. Please try to open the PC, disconnect the IDE cables from hard drives and optical drives, double-check which is primary and which is secondary IDE cables, connect ONLY your main hard drive (The one holds your OS) to the master end of the Primary IDE cable, and then connect your burner to the master end of the Secondary IDE cable. Boot your computer and check your Device Manager and Nero Info Tool again to see if your hard drive comes with the Primary Idle Channel and the burner comes with Secondary IDE Channel. If everything goes as expected, you can connect the rest of your hardwares. Tell you the truth, I don't like the Roxio Adaptec EasyCD Creator CD/DVD burning software you use. It causes all kind of funny problems that I rather copy DVD by hand, if I could, than use it for burning movies though

                            Regards

Taelon, I,m prtty sure that the hard drives are master and slave on primary Ide channel . The optical dtives are dvd burner master on secondary ide channel and dvd-rom (not -a -burner) is set to slave on the secondary ide channel. That might not be the best wat to set these drives up, but they work welll. Now on visual inspection, There is no qustion that HD 1 or the hard drive that boots Win98se is attached to the primary ide channel as the master and the 2n hard drive shares its ribbon bable and is the slave drive for the primary ide channel. The same for the secodary ide motherboard channel; burner is master, dvd-rom is secondary slave. I'll do what you said but I rather first uninstall easy roxio as I never use it, except that it was bundled with Power DVD which I like ver4. I do not know if uninctalling EASY CD creator, wouild uninstall powewr dvd but big deal. Possibly thts trashy progrAM INSTALLED IS CAUSING THE PROBLEM BY INTERFERING WITH THE SPI FOR DVDSHRINK? OOPS i just heard caps are innapproprite for posting---I'm sorry but can only one finger type. Tell me what you think about my thought before I go into this old computer and try loosening cables. By the way, this win98se is part of a home nertwork I configured with a wired linksys rutrer ,a 120gb network drive and 23 computer workstations, two of the 3 run win98se and the 3rd is the xp. The older 98se is a celeron cpu 400mhz and only has a cdrom drive. It all works well as I had no help and was very lucky 3 yrs ago connecting it
