that's a catch 22, the newest models have the newer firmware

BUT! the models that have been out for several months have firmware
that's been updated and is more mature.

as new media is developed then new firmware has to be flashed

buy an nec 3540 and stick with 8x name brand media(that's the rub).

After you get it, if you really want to tweak it into one of the best
drives ever made, post back! There are several people who can tell you
        the advantages of hacked firmwares.

what more advantages are there other than defeating the rip lock and being able to burn with more medias?

Updating stock will give you the newer faster medias, hacked can give you a better burn startegy(higher quality burns). The 3540 is finally maturing in this
            regard, long reads tho.

I have been following this for the last few months, just starting to get a handle on it, it's all cynthia's fault.

                Like Dee says(from the liggy&....)

"My NEC drives are my fun drives, they are very tweakable and very robust.
I also use them for burning all DVD-R and most DVD+R"

of course she has 13 dvd burners, and I thought I was crazy.
