I applied the sp3 admin download to xpsp2 cd with nlite, turned off useless stuff in bios for the dell, there were no other settings to tweak tho

no agp slot and only 8 megs of video memory

after turning off the intel crud with msconfig and a defag and a few bootups the computer is cold booting to a functional desktop in 16 seconds, shutting down in 7 seconds

it's been sitting around for 6 months and the guy was moving accross country and decided to give it to me, since he had no disks and it hardly booted or ran anymore, I helped him tweak his new vista laptop a little

I am only working with a generic disk?

There are 6 "pid.inf" files found in the executable or source "kb936929" file. This file "pid.inf" (e.g. i386\ip) controls how the source file acts upon installation. Once slipstreamed, only 1 "pif.inf" will be copied to the CD, including the generated "setupp.ini" file.

PID.inf is related to a change with the activation system for Windows XP. As mentioned in the "

Overview of Windows XP Service Pack 3"

As in Windows Server 2003 SP2 and Windows Vista, users can now complete operating system installation without providing a product key during a full, integrated installation of Windows XP SP3. The operating system will prompt the user for a product key later as part of Genuine Advantage. As with previous service packs, no product key is requested or required when installing Windows XP SP3 using the update package available through Microsoft Update. Note The Windows Product Activation changes in Windows XP SP3 are not related to the Windows Vista Key Management Service (KMS). This update affects only new operating system installations from integrated source media. This update affects the installation media only and is not a change to how activation works in Windows XP.

well I can just guess there's so many versions of xp, it's trying to match or carry then thru with the slipstream and even deny the action in some cases

MS is getting elaborate with all this

I didnt understand half of what I quoted

just a joke, i got it thats how microsoft wants to make sp3 harder to install on non geniun systems and also a way so they can install without a cdkey for trial

I have a question, when the process got to the point to where it says "running processes after install", how long did this last for you. Two of mine have been at this stop for a long time, and I am trying to figure out if maybe they are frozen?

Is it the upgrade? that might take a while? or be a bad sign? doing it online?

It was the sp3 from windows update, and it was a bad sign, I forgot about my protection and left it on, so it was not able to restart all the processes. Fortunately sp3 has some pretty well built in remedies (other than checking for the protection to begin with, which would be nice).

I could not restart or shut down the computers because the install program would not let me, so I had to kill it the hard way. When I then started them again and tried to enter safe mode, I could not because sp3 would not let you do anything until it completely put the computer back to its state before the attempted install. Which I thought was wonderful.

But, Thanks Chewy, for checking on me, I appreciate it. I was so furious at the time I could not stop until I got them going again.

Hi guys. I'm thinking of running a repair disk or maybe just a clean install on my dell w/my xp sp3 generic disc and using my Dell code. Only thing is would it work even though the code is 4 media center edition 2005 and my generic is xp home? Guess it would have to be a clean install but would it matter if i use xp home and use my code from the media center?

If not and would just need to add sp3 does microsoft support it for free for an existing oem like my dell?

                          Hi folks,

I just installed my XP PRO SP2 on my new laptop ...

Q1: Is it worthed it to download and install SP3? What will SP3 give me over SP2?

Q2: I downloaded SP3 from Microsoft Official Site and it is few KBs smaller than teh version from MajorGeeks's? Why the difference?

Q3: MG site says that only install patches needed from their "unofficial" SP3 downlaod ... since may be make your system unstable? Any input on this?

For someone like me a "newbie" in software land ... which ones would I install from MG package. Better yet from Microsoft official copy!?!?

                          Thanks,
                          G!

frm microsoft, better frm windows update if it shows for u, otherwise left it alone for some time as ur system may become crippled due to some sp3 issues specifically with AMD systems.

If not and would just need to add sp3 does microsoft support it for free for an existing oem like my dell?
nope ur MCE key will not work on Home edition. ur oem pro key will work on MCE oem but ull be getting either a xp pro incase of pre mce2005 or cripplled xp mce2005 which is no good for anything.

SP3 is free and if ur system is genuine XP u can install it.

Thnx atifish. Would I be able to use nlite w/the genuine oem mce disc that came w/my dell to slipstream sp3 so not to have all the previous bulk and then install it on my dell w/the mce key?

Also genuine xp. mce is version of xp. will it install sp3?
