Virtualdub error

Hi everybody

I have a problem.
I've recorded an AVI file out of a digital camcorder and I've tried to convert it into DivX.
I've followed the steps reported in the Nick Page's manual "AVI to DivX", started virtual dub and tried to open the AVI file.
I get the error: "couldn't locate compressor for format "dvsd" unknown virtual dub requires a video for windows (vfw) compatible codec to decompress video. direct show codecs , such as those used by windows media player are not suitable".

Can anyone help me?

A Google search discloses that one version of this codec is available for download from:

http://www.mainconcept.com/archive/mcdv204.exe

(Since this is the publisher's site, and it's indicated that it places a watermark on the files, I assume that this is a legitimate "freebie" and NOT warez)

Additionally, an unrestricted version should be available in the following "codec pack" Tsunami FilterPack 3.9.6
