Ghostbusters Becomes First Movie Released on USB Memory

Sony Entertainment and PNY Technologies have teamed up to become the first to distribute a movie (legally) on a USB flash drive. PNY Technologies, developers and manufactures of all kinds of memory devices such as USB sticks, SD cards, computer memory and so on, announced the arrival of the original "Ghostbusters" movie on a 2 gigabyte USB drive.

As for DRM, you bet there is. According to Custom PC, the end user can download the movie onto their computer, however, the USB stick must be inserted in order for the movie to play.

Not surprised about the DRM thing, but a bit surprised that the first movie on a non-optical media would come from Sony.

I think that must be a TYPE-0, I can't buy a full length movie of Ghostbusters on a 2gb USB flash drive, way too much compression, but I could buy maybe a 4gb or 6gb USB flash drive to hold the movie.


But still, you would have to clean-out the DRM of the movie on the hard drive, build the movie as you want to from the hard drive with the USB flash drive removed from the computer.

how do we know DRM is the only other things beside the movie? after many stunt by Sony?

2GB for a movie isn't bad at all... using X264 I could make a 1400MB AVI that looks almost as good as a dual-layer DVD.

I wonder what type of file it is, though... is it actually an AVI? Or is it something like iTunes/WMV that can have DRM? Because if it's just a normal file you could force-open the drive (I'm sure it'll be locked so you can't open the root without using third-party software) and copy it to somewhere else...
