Some users have benchmarked both the new and old PS3s, and found that there are not just aesthetic differences between the two.
For the system booting time, the old PS3 was actually faster. As was Blu-ray loading, which the PS3 Fat was actually 7 seconds faster than the PS3 Slim. But when it came to loading games, the new PS3 Slim held the advantage. Here are the test videos: Booting: Blu-ray loading: Game loading: The differences in speed in most cases were just a couple of seconds, so most people won't really know or care. I suspect this is in line with any hardware changes they made to the blu-ray drives.
Everyone knows that the price tag was so high due to the drive. It wouldn't surprise me to find out that Sony actually placed the booting sequences for the games on the board itself. It;s how we did the mod chips for the PS2. It would be a very risky move to do so, for hacking purposes, but it wouldn't really surprise me if they did. This is pure theorycrafting. I'm not suggesting that they did it, just the idea that they could. |
