Pay TV Provider Foxtel Launches Downloads Service (Australia)

Australian (cable/satellite) pay TV provider Foxtel has just announced that it will launch a free download service for it's subscribers, and will introduce a live streaming service as well.

The download service will at first feature over 400 hours of content that can be downloaded for free by any Foxtel subscriber, and will be expanded to feature 600 hours of content within a month.

The streaming service, starting with sports channel ESPN360, will also be expanded next year to cover the 2010 Vancouver Winter Games.

What's interesting is that this is a subscription television provider that is offering this service, not a TV network, nor an ISP. The future of streaming and downloads, as well as interactive TV, may be through subscription television providers, as they already have a profit model in place to take advantage of new forms of distribution.
