Blizzard Co-Founder: Developers Wasting Resources on DRM

Blizzard Co-Founder Frank Pearce believes that game developers should concentrate less on DRM, and more on the game content itself. Pearce feels that no anti-piracy technology will succeed as there are far too many people interested in disabling DRM measures, many simply out of curiosity or the need for a challenge.

Pearce says that Blizzard's strategy is to build up a strong and loyal user base, a gaming community that gamers want to be part of and adds value to the game. "The best approach from our perspective is to make sure that you’ve got a full-featured platform that people want to play on, where their friends are, where the community is," Pearce said in an interview with VideoGamer.

Blizzard's upcoming, and eagerly awaited game, Starcraft II, has removed LAN based multiplayer, which some gamers say is an underhanded attempt to force people to play on Blizzard's multiplayer service, Battle.net, and thus force some kind of checking to see if the copy of the game is legitimate. However, the single player campaign can still be played offline.
