NTFS Recovery

'E:\ Is Not Accesible.
The File or Directory is Corrupt or Unreadable!'
Or so says the error message when I try to read one of my external drives. GetDataBack for NTFS is, however, able to reconstruct the directories (and apparently read the files). GetDataBack for NTFS, however, costs nearly $80 (US). Anyone know of a program that can get me my files back cheaper?

Usually a sign the drive is dying, don't waste too much time or money on it
or trust it if you think it's fixed

Yeah, I need to get some files from it that I haven't saved elsewhere and $79 seems a bit steep for that. Was wondering if there was similar Linux or open source recovery software.
