    Blown hdd's????

    Help please!

We had a power cut today the computer was off although plugged into the mains via a surge protector. When I turned the computer on after the outage I had an error message saying the bios settings had been lost or something to that discription (unfortunately never took note of that exact error message) then it was followed by a message saying disk read error restart ctrl+alt+del! After that every time I boot I just end up with this error. I'm running windows xp pro 4gb ram DDR 2, 2 x 250gb sata hdd on raid. Could the outage have blown my hdd(s). I have tried the following.*

1, checked the bios setting all seems correct although had to reset the bios clock as had defaulted back to 1/1/2006 maybe CMOS battery is dead (had no errors saying this) or the first error regarding the bios caused this (this is my guess)

2, Booted from my xp disk same disk read error

3, Ran Linux slax but cannot see hdd although never have been able to when using it previously. Never really used Linux so may just be missing something here.

4, Ran repair console off xp disk and get the following error when trying to read directories on hdd's**'An error occurred during directory emuneration'

5, Chkdsk errors saying the volume contains one or more inrecoverable problems

6, changed out ram same errors

Any thoughts or ideas greatly received. If a blown drive can I plug the drives in as a slave to recover my files even know they have been running in a raid config?

What does your raid bios report for the status of the stripe?

Hi where will I find the info regarding the raid and stripe? Know I have been in it before just can't remember where to access the screen sure it was an option after the post screen but don't *have one now?

Can I find this info in the bios anywhere?

      Thanks

        Scrap that problem solved.

Looks like with the power outage the CMOS battery must of drained and reset all Bios settings to default. It was trying to load my sata drives without the raid setting selected in the Bios.

I corrected this saved to CMOS and problems solved.

Thanks for the thoughts as always chewy.

Go out to Rat shack and get a new cmos battery. That way if you do have another power outage you will not loose your cmos settings.

            Sounds like a good plan!

I use ups/avr on all my important equipment. Especially my computer equipment. That way when I am doing bios chip updates, I do not worry about power outages or brown outs. I believe that the CMOS battery is a CR2032 for the motherboard.
