It's worth noting that the PS3's first year performance is almost exactly the same as that of the Xbox 360, so it's not doing too badly. However, the market place was very different when the 360 was launched. It was a market that wasn't all that interested in HD "next-gen" gaming yet, with no interest in Blu-ray/HD DVD as compared to now (where a lot of people are buying the PS3 just for the Blu-ray capabilities). On the other hand, the 360 did not have to compete with the Wii during all of it's first year, although just how much effect the Wii has on 360/PS3 sales is a debatable points (my opinion is that it does not affect sales a great deal, because gamers who really want the 360/PS3 are not going to find everything they need in the Wii, but people who have never gamed before is the Wii's main market).
