Sony has finally did what many analysts have been urging them to do, and have lowered the PS3's price by $100. The 80 GB PS3 is now $299.
Not only that, they have also announced a new PS3 SKU, the PS3 Slim, confirming earlier rumours. The new PS3 Slim will also debut at $299 in September and will come with a 120GB HDD.
This comes after Sony's financial statements showed a 70% drop in the production cost of the PS3, which might be further slashed through new manufacturing techniques used in the PS3 Slim (which also has some cut down features).
Now, personal opinion time, it seems rather silly to buy a PS3 right now, as $299 gets you a "fat" PS3 with smaller HDD. However, some have already complained that the new PS3 Slim does not look as good as the current PS3, as it does not have a glossy finish. And in fact, it has a longer length than the current PS3 (290mm versus 274mm).
The dimensions of the PS3 Slim are: 290 X 65 X 290 mm (Width X Height X Length)
The dimensions of the PS3 "Fat" are: 324 X 98 X 274 mm (Width X Height X Length)

Even if you want the PS3 Fat, then might be better to wait until the PS3 Slim is out - the Fat might get further price cuts if it becomes end of line, or if not, then I'm sure it will get cheaper or come with a bigger HDD in the future.
What will be interesting now is to see how Microsoft, and perhaps even Nintendo, responds. There are rumours that Microsoft is going to lower the price of the Elite to Pro levels, but Nintendo may also need to do something as sales are declining rather quickly for the Wii as it risks becoming the most expensive console left.
