Jay Leno's move into prime time was something that *other* networks celebrated, expecting to gain in ratings with their superior drama programming. However, this has not happened.
While ratings are down for Leno's NBC at the 10 PM slot that runs his comedy show, other networks have not only not experienced a rating rise, but a rating drop. So where did all the viewers go? Digital Video Recorders, TiVo, is apparently the answer.
In the same period, DVR ratings went up nearly the same amount as ratings dropped for these shows, and this is causing networks to worry. Unlike live TV, people watching recorded programs have the ability to skip ads, which is the major source of revenue for networks. With downloads, some legal and most illegal, also now becoming an ever more popular way to watch TV shows, networks will need to think and act fast to find a way to survive in the 21st century.
