isoHunt Loses Lawsuit, No Trial Needed

isoHunt has been given some bad news just before Christmas. They have lost the lawsuit brought against them by US movie studios, and the judge in the case didn't even see fit to grant them a trial, instead giving a summary judgement as the judge felt that this case was similar to previous cases involving Napster and Grokster.

The court found isoHunt guilty of inducing infringement, and so it made it impossible for the website to use "safe harbor" provisions under the DMCA, which protects website operators as long as they take active steps to prevent piracy.

isoHunt still remains fully operation today, operating out of Canada. It is unknown at this stage whether isoHunt will appeal the decision.

    More:

Following a 2006 complaint by several Hollywood studios, a US federal court in California has ruled that isoHunt is guilty of inducing copyright infringement. Due to the similarities between this case and earlier ones involving Napster and Grokster, the judge decided there is no need to proceed to a full trial. Summary judgment was granted.
