Cyberlink Demonstrates 3D Blu-ray Experience on PowerDVD

At the CES 2010, Cyberlink has demonstrated 3D Blu-ray playback on a PC using the PowerDVD software.

The 3D Blu-ray standard requires the use of the MVC format (Multi-View Codec), which is based on the H.264/AVC standard, which allows the encoding of 2 separate video signals in the same file, one signal for each eye to create the 3D effect. As such, decoding means that instead of one H.264 being decoded, two is now required, and Cyberlink is working closely with both Nvidia and ATI to provide GPU assisted decoding to make 3D Blu-ray playback possible.

The demonstration seems to be a success, with CPU usage relatively low, although even on the PC, you'll still require several new pieces of equipment before it will all work, including glasses (available with Nvidia's GeForce 3D Vision Kit) and a new monitor (the Samsung 2233RZ 120 Hz 3D gaming LCD).
