UK Freeview TV Now Has DRM

Free to air TV in the UK will now have DRM, Ofcom said. All new equipment that supports the UK Freeview system will need to have anti-piracy technology or they won't be granted a license.

The BBC had requested anti-piracy technology to be added to Freeview TV as they say this will lead to more "high value" content to be released. Opponents say that all Ofcom has done is to put up "barriers to innovation and trade".

Ofcom stressed that users will not need to upgrade their existing set top boxes.

From Ofcom's statement, it also appears that the BBC had requested "more intrusive alternatives", including the full encryption of TV programs. But Ofcom found these measures to be unnecessary.
