A new report by market researchers In-Stat says that, by 2015, sales of DVD recorders would virtually end, as Blu-ray recorders take over, and the same may be in store for DVD players as well.
In-Stat predicts that Blu-ray players will reach 105 million by 2015.
But it's not all rosy for Blu-ray, as In-Stat says the biggest threat to the HD format is not a disc at all. "Blu-ray recorders will replace DVD recorders and many consumers of recorders will even drop the physical disk media option altogether and instead opt for a player with a large hard drive or digital media storage," Norm Bogen, In-Stat's VP of digital entertainment, predicted. And Blu-ray isn't doing too well in China either. In-Stat reports that China's own CBHD disc standard is competing well with Blu-ray due to lower prices.
But the imminent demise of DVD players and recorders does not signal an end for the format. With all Blu-ray players (and recorders) supporting DVD playback (and recording), DVD still represent the budget option for consumers, and backward compatibility will ensure it hangs around for a while yet.
