panasonic E80 setup problem

I have tivo with one S vid output
E80 recorder has 3 S vid inputs and 2 outputs
Tv has only 1 S vid input

My goal is to be able to run the tivo w/o having the E80 turned on.

before I bought any switches, I did this:

tivo to input 1 on e80
vcr to input 3 on e80

output on e80 to TV

this setup is PERFECT except that I don't want to have to keep on the dvd recorder to watch plain old tivo.

I tried this switch which has 4 inputs and 2 outputs to the same source

tivo to splitter

tivo split 1 to input 1 on switch

tivo split 2 to input 1 on E80
output 1 E80 to input 2 on switch
vcr to input 3 on switch

output on switch back to TV

this setup worked exactly as I needed it to BUT the splitter amp gave a poor picture and I have to take it back tonight. It was broken or didn't amplify very well. (I am sure it was the amp per my isolation of it right back to the TV and still a horrible pic) I looked through the rest of the radio shack stuff and nothing seems to fit my need.

Does anyone have any other suggestions? I'd love to have 1 switch do all this and would pay 100 bucks for it. As it stands now I'm out 44 for the switch and 42 for the amp. the amp is going back and even the switch can if I can find another method. But I do like the switch because of the infrared switching.
