divx avi plays in some players, not in others

divx plays in wmp 4.1 but not 6.4 or any other player. Gspot shows all codecs installed and should play fine. Virtualdub plays the file fine and on some files the preview window in properties plays fine.
Recently installed ffdshow, didn't make any difference. Any ideas?
