WinDVD audio pops and crackles

I just got WinDVD 3.1 retail version, and when I play DVDs in 6 speaker mode I get random pops and crackles from the audio - similar to what you'd hear from an old vinyl record. I am using Windows XP on a 1.6 GHz PC with 512 MB of RAM, a Creative Audigy sound card with Creative Inspire 5.1 (5300) speakers, and an Nvidia GeForce 3 video card. It never happened with the OEM version that came with the computer, but I couldn't enable 6 speaker mode with it, and I tried the tweaker utilities to no avail. Is there a patch I need to apply? Any ideas?
