Virtualdub

Hey guys,
I'm having some trouble with virtualdub, it won't let me upload a video I shot on my iPhone 4s? I'm assuming I need to convert the video but I'm not sure how to go about it? Do I need to download software to do this? If so does anyone know the best free software for the job? Any help...

I downloaded virtualdub and photoshop because I want to make gifs.

I downloaded a youtube video and converted it into an avi format. I open the file on virtualdub but it's just a black screen. How do I fix this?

I apologize for the basic nature of this question but I've looked all over and I can't seem to get an answer I understand (any answer really!)

When I do this (with or without the trim which I added just to make sure it wasn't a frame quantity issue)

They are persistent in the sense that no matter what I do I can't delete them...

It only happens to some of the AVIs I've thrown at VirtualDub and it is annoying as hell, I am willing to accept that it is down to something I am (or rather, what I am not) doing.
