    Power Supply requirements ??

I have a AMD Athlon XP 1500+ 1GB RAM machine with a 128MB video card. I also have 2 SATA/150 PCI cards that will hold 2 SATA and 2 regular HDD. I was thinking of filling up this thing with HDD I have. How big a PSU do you think I'll need? I think right now it has a 350W but I gotta look and make sure.

A good 450(brand is important) should carry that and if you upgrade later
might handle a newer cpu and vid card.

If I put too much stuff in there and they try to draw too much power, what would happen?

I seen a post somewhere about using 2 PSU's for 1 'puter but was looking for it a little whaile ago and couldn't find it. I got about 4 PSU in ol puters laying around. Hmmm I gotta look for that post some more.

I'm running a 650 watt Antec True Power supply which I know is overkill right now for me but will allow me to keep building without having to worry about replacing power supply again. Would hate to go through the inevitable random shutting down of the computer when I use to run short of power.

@Chewy, would a PSU work ok without being hooked up to a MB, maybe jumping out a pin or 2 if needed?

@Chewy think this would work to get a dedicated PSU for HDD. Jumper out IAW the article qand use the power connectors for the HDD? Seems like it should get the PSU powered up to supply power, whatcha think?

you can place a psu almost anywhere if you like/need

for testing purposes i often connect psu and mb only to have the mb powered but without attaching the psu anywhere

or are you thinking of using a SECOND psu in order to power additional equipment like harddrives and/or cd/dvd?

of course that is also possible and no big deal at all

@UncasMS - yes I was thinking of using a power supply I have laying around to power additional HDD's. So would household power to the PSU and jumpering the MB connections like the PSU in the link I posted give the power to the Molex connection for power to HDD. I realize the IDE cables have to go to the MB

                              thanks
