Your region setting will not change with original firmware.

Many thanks for more info. Sorry if I sound like a pain in the neck. When I unzipped the Firmware, it mentions it's Toshiba and Samsung. My DVD burner was made by Freecom. I still feel worried about installing it and it says it's two years old by the creation date. The image shows you.

I've been to that Freecom web site before but I wasn't sure which one to install.

By the way, I forgot to say, my DVD burner is an external one.

      Many thanks.

      Darren.

Perhaps the burner is also some years old?

I started the program SFDNWIN.exe and there is an option to download the latest firmware thru internet.

I'll move this thread to the burning section and then Chewy the moderator in that forum - can help you further before you start an update.

Many thanks for more help. I checked the back of my burner and it also said it was made in April this year. I also checked the Nero log file and I found something interesting. First, I found a code in the log file that matches one of the Firmwares in the Freecom web page that you sent. One is for FREECOM_DVD+/-RW16N8 version FR03 and the other is for FREECOM_DVD+/-RW16H9 version FR02. If you look at my log file you'll also see mine is for FREECOM_DVD+/-RW16H9 for version FR02. Well, you told me I need version FR02 so that infomation helped, too. When I saw the version for FR03 about 15 minutes ago, that was when I got confused again going 50-50 on what to do. I'm glad I found the correct one in the end.

Many thanks, again for you help.

          Darren.

Only remember this when you flash the burner

            No disc in the burner
            All other programs closed
After the flash you need to restart your computer

            Good luck!

Many more thanks. I didn't know about the first two but sometimes I do forget to reboot after installations unless a message appears to tell me to.

At the moment things are still a bit hard. I'm not sure how to install it.

I've added an image to make things easier for me to explain. First, I can't add anything in the empty boxes and I'm not sure what to add in Status or the last box. I noticed when I changed the drive from Combo D-Drive to Freecom E-Drive, it indicates FR00 when I currantly have FR01. Also, I think I might have the wrong Firmware because mine is supposed to be FREECOM_ DVD+/-RW16H9 and I noticed the Firmware I recently downloaded shows FREECOM_ DVD+/-RW16H4. I don't understand why for that part and do I have the wrong Firmware? I tried something encase I was doing things in the wrong stage. In the folder that has Firmware, there's two files, the first is called FR021007 and the second is called SFDNWIN. I thought maybe in SFDNWIN I should click on Open, highlight FR021007 inside Open As and click on Open. It failed. That was before filling out the empty boxes because as I said, I can't get a cursor flashing in them boxes and I don't know what to type in Status or the last box.

              Many thanks.

              Darren.

                possible issues
1.usb burning(low ram also) let's lower burn speed to 4x, that burn took 15 minutes anyway(4x speed)

let's free up a little ram and keep extra processes from loading

                2. let's get a fresh install of nero burning rom from here

and get rid of that incd(add and remove programs) and run the clean tool for incd from here

                3. make sure you have done disk cleanup and defragged

                4. looks like freecom doesn't make anything, they just put their name on it
since the firmware dates are so screwy I would stick with high quality slower speed(8x) media

                5. those sonic drivers and adaptec aspi probably aren't helping anything

If you have unzipped both the two files to an folder and then when you have that program running - pressing the folder button and selecting the file FR021007.BIN should work.

No, I don't either understand why it shows up as FR00.

Many thanks for the help. I have downloaded some big files recently but the confusing thing is, when I managed to burn my last DVD on a recordable disc just before the next failed roughly ten minutes later, I never downloaded anything in-between. I will free some disk space encase because I know too much can even stop Norton Go Back from working and it can stop it loading in the background sometimes when booting up. However, I don't understand why my DVDs on recordables were working for a bit with the same amount of data in my hard drive and why they failed afterwards with no other downloads in-between the success and failures. The lastest home movie might have had about 10% more or less GBs compared to the others, I'm not sure. I backed them up on AVI to a different disc encase the DVD copies didn't play and I also emptied my Recycle Bin after the succesful burns.

                    Many thanks.

                    Darren.

It's all about margins, with that little amount of ram, you have none, also the incd and sonic drivers are just accidents waiting to happen.

Iffy media(optodisc) increases the chance of a failed burn, when you add it all up, there's no way to isolate one cause.

Many thanks for the help. I did free a lot of RAM and the problem went for one moment and the next it was back. I haven't installed or downloaded anything since.

                        Many thanks.

I found out something interesting and strange. The interesting thing is, Roxio tells me I have FR00 and Nero tells me I have FR01. I wonder if each CD-ROM with the burning software has Firmware, too and it's automatically installed with the burning software. The strange thing is, FR01 is a newer version out of the two and my copy of Nero is older than Roxio. I can't understand why an older piece of software has newer piece of Firmware. I might be wrong about the Firmware. I remember you said you didn't understand why FR00 appeared in the Firmware.

When I opened SFDNWIN, I did click on the open folder icon, the first icon on the top left for Open, the Choose File box appeared and I highlighted FR021007 and clicked on Open and I couldn't get any further because of a message saying the Firmware isn't compatable. I downloaded the one with DVD RW16H9 FR02 listed and that matches my burner from what the Nero log file says - that says DVD RW16H9.
                          Many thanks.

It's got to the point when things are so confusing. As I mentioned in my other post, Roxio says I have version FR00 and Nero says I have version FR01. I found out about the other version with Roxio because I noticed FR00 when I was burning on a CD yesterday.

I don't know why the matching Firmware says it's not compatable. What my next move is, I'm going to send my DVD burner off to either have it replaced or fixed because I'm sure there's something wrong with the burner itself. When I plugged my older DVD burner that's the same make and model, I don't have problems burning on to DVD+R and DVD-R discs. That one also has a fault because it stops me playing Minus discs in my Pioneer DVD player. That's why I bought a new DVD burner. I'll let you know the out-come of what happens.

                              Many thanks.

                              Darren.

I got my DVD burner replaced today and that problem I had the other week where I couldn't burn on DVD recordables was the burner. My replacement is working fine. So, after all that, the burner was faulty.

Many thanks again to everybody that gave me the information for the help.
