Why go dvd or even vcd?

What is the point of transfering files into usable vob, ifo formats for use on a dvd, or even a VCD? (I know the files that are input into these respectively are different, but the outcome is the same............big ass files!!!!!!)

Can't you just save space and money by making data CD's and running them on your PC?

I know some like to capture certain items (such as home movies, mountain climbing video's, trips to the zoo........etc.) for use on set top DVD players, but it seems to me that it costs so much time and effort when you can just use the raw data for display on your home PC.....

Just wondering.............give me some thoughts all you digital freaks out there!!!!!

i convert my avi files to xvcd so i can watch my porn on my dvd player but also burn the avi as data so i can have two copies so if one got messed up i still have another copy of it.

I agree with Dav as I usually view my movies on my PC, since I'm at my PC 24/7. However, I usually make VCDs (ocassionally) so that I can lend it to my not-so-PC-oriented friends who would be able to view it on their VCD/DVD players at home.

The bottomline is:
If you're viewing it alone (Porn, etc) then you should just store it on your computer or burn to Data discs.
Else if you're viewing it with friends and family, your PC monitor is not exactly the best tv in the world so burning it to a more widely-used format would be a better choice.

-- If you have enough money for such an extravagent and unneeded item (such as a 50 in plasma screen HD monitor with complete 6 channel surround sound, marble fire place and all amenities included for one low price) then I think you can afford to just go out and buy the original copy of the material that you're displaying for the entire neighborhood to see.........

-- As for meeting with family and friends to show them your home videos about your last vacation to the Himalaya's ... I see the point, but once again, how much money would you spend on that kind of set up........stop trying to prove your worth to people other than yourself..........

unless u have a very good HTPC, the DVD format is still the best format.

i recently made a DVD of Wonderful Days (korean anime) with AC3 audio and DAMN that AC3 track is HOT HOT.. i am a bass fanatic and this movie simply blew me away...

so i ordered the DVD

using the DVD to play on a standalone dvd player connected to your Denon and HiFi speakers beats any crappy PC system any day..

Well I'm sure that most of us PC-enthusiasts would prefer to watch movies in the comfort of our own PCs, undisturbed and being able to scroll through the movie, adjust the volume and even surf the net all with the click of a mouse button...

-- The point is that if you want the highest quality for the highest caliber system, then you buy the @#!*ing DVD, like you just said...........and by the way, not everyone has just any crappy PC system, most of new users out there own a setup with a descent graphics card and sound card that allow them, with capable hardware, to view movies in 5.1 DDSurround and with more than adequate bass (sometimes my neighbors complain....oops).......

do the math, a fat PC setup costs about 2 thousand dollars, while the same effect in home stereo and entertainment equipment costs about twice as much, any way you look at it...................but as Joe said...............to each his own........................Joe once again, I agree with you there.......................

i dont actually have a dvd player in my room, i have a HTPC connected to a Sanyo LCD projected via DVI and SPDIF out to a Denon decoder... i have a HTPC and IMO it beats any expensive DVD player, especially in HD resolution..
