Hi folks,
What do you folks suggest to Ensure my new Laptop to be protected against the followings and not in any specific order ... before I start surfing the web ...
- Keyloggers
- Trojans
- Backdoors
- Viruses (Worms, ...)
- Adware
- Nasty Exploiting Tracking Cookies
The reason I am asking I keep hearing more & more Internet Frauds and Scams from Nigiria and Serbia and other Russian countries.
BTW guys, Why would anybody Offer a FREE Antivirus!?!? Is it possible that they are also giving us something that we DON'T want???
Thanks,

Hello gonwk
Let me suggest you a list:
Firewall:
Comodo Personall Firewall - this is the best, do not look beyond, and its free.
Antivirus:
Paid: NOD32 from ESET, this is the best, very light on system resources, quite and not that costly. The only thing is, the interface is bit technical in nature. So you need to read a bit for configuring it properly.
Free:
1. Anti Virus Shield from AOL- this is the stripped down version of legendary Kaspersky AV having the same detection engine but not all the features.
2. AVAST! Home free
3. AVG Anti Virus
Security Programs:
1. SpywareBlaster
2. SpywareGuard
3. AVG Anti Spyware/ SUPER Anti Spyware
4. Comodo BO Clean
5. McAfee Site Advisor
6. MVPS Host Files
7. IE Spayed
8. Ad Aware SE Personal
9. Spybot Search and Destroy
10. CleeanUp!4.52/ ATF Cleaner to keep your PC Clutter free
11. Comodo Anti Spam [optional]
Except the AV, rest are all free. Moreover all of these together will not take up even 50MB of your HDDComment

Aside from firewall, antivirus, spyware, use Firefox with a few good add-ons will help too. Adblock Plus, NoScript and McAfee SiteAdvisor are some of my favorites.
Also depends how the laptop is used. Wireless or wired? Modem, Router, NAT?

Hi BR7, SRC & Dan,
THANKS for your replies guys ...
@ BR7: got it ... lately I am kinda of jittery since friend of mine was ripped of on his credit card. But I don't do any online business anyway ... but still ...
@ Dan: I will probably use it "wireless" mode ... for everything since I am on the run! I will be downloading and surfing and everything else in-between. But I wonder if this is a "Smart" way of doing business.
Q1: Any Suggestions!?!?
Q2: Can I also run the 3 programs that you have mentioned in addition to SRC's list?
@ SRC:
Hi there ... thanks for the extensive list ...
SRC, I am currently running the Free Eval version of "AVG 7.5 Malware Trial" and it seems it catches everything.
Q1: Are you saying that NOD32 is better than AVG? Also, do they have Trial Period?
BTW, I am also running SpyBot and Ad-Aware SE freeware and Spyware Blaster ...
Q2: SRC, your 11 Security Programs that you have written ... are you telling me to install each and everyone of them? If so, A-OK ... just want to make sure that is what you are telling me.
THANKS AGAIN,
G!Comment

As for Firefox and it's add-ons, I suppose it is only a personal preference?
It seems less frequent with attacks and bugs then other browsers to me.
With a few of those add-ons, it makes for fairly safe surfing.
(They are tiny additions to the browser, shouldn't be a problem with any antivirus, firewall that I know of.)

I have a 60 day Norton installed right now and will be going back to AVG Free antivirus and I have used a free firewall called Sygate Personal fire wall 5.6 I believe the company was bougth by Symatec (Norton). Both seem to have worked well in the past and are easy on RAM.Comment

Howdy folks AVG 7.5 never picked up one thing for me. Where as the previous version did. I have been running avast for a few months now. And so far it has detected one virus on my system (And removed it) It also stopped a worm before it had a chance to download. The GUI is a bit off putting but their is lots of different skins to choose from. I suppose it depends on the sites you frequent as to whether you AV will pick anything up.Comment
