I have posted over the last few monhs about problems with burning Dvd's . I though I had solved the problem when I found out my video card was spiking the power rails to my Dvd burner. Well I was able to record one good Dvd before the problem got really bad. My computer finall "died". My motherboard, a Gigabyte KV800tm "crapped out taking my amd 3200 64 processor with it. My computer was only 2 years old, boo hoo. TigerdirectDirect was where I purchased the Machine from. Well they gave me a Asus K8V SE deluxe board and an amd 3700 64 Processor for $229.00 !!! I purchased a half gig more of ram and a 160 gig hard drive. The systems now burns great. I can encode a dvd using Shrink in about 20 minutes and burn a full length DVD in 11 minutes. I took the advice you guys gave me and bought a new 600 w power supply also.So for about $400 I have an AMD3700 64 with1.5 gigs of ram, 160G, 80G, and 70G hard drives and a lite on 16X burner. Windows let me load my OEM XP on this new machine with no problems. Thank you all for your help. The burning failures let me know my machine was failing and I was able to back up everything.

Thanks for getting back to us toomanycats. It really is appreciated - only recently a number of people were musing that there isn't enough feedback and we certainly appreciate the time you have taken to let us know of hardware fix to your problems.
PS Since it's a hardware issue, I have moved this thread to General Computing - hope you don't mind

I couldn't help but notice your Australian moniker. I belong to a Pain Forum called Pain World in Australia, for people with chronic pain. I would love to go "down under" some day. (My wife doesn't count). I also noticed a lot of people "bitch" a lot on this forum and to be honest I just don't get it. I also noticed that my spelling was horrible in my post. I am literate, I just have fat fingers.Comment

I ended getting a Vantech 600watt power supply. The only thing left of the original sytem is the case. My Radeon X800 256 AGP Pro kicks butt in this new configuration. I actually got a bad Asus motherboard and the Amd 3700 64 came thru with bent pins. Tigerdirect.com promptly sent me new replacements no questions asked. The Asus and ATI both have 3 years warrantees, the last of that as ATI has gone to 1 year on new products, Asus is still ofering 3 years on their stuff.Comment

I thought I had solved this problem and then it came back on the next DVD I burned. By process of elimination (seeing as there were only 2 things left from the old computer) I noticed that the computer showed I had only 1 Gig of Ram when it should have showed 1.5 Gigs. When I removed the new 512 meg ram the computer showed 378 megs of ram. It should've showed a gig, which then lead me to believe that these two 512's were bad. I put the new 512meg ram back in left out the "bad 512's" and burned a perfect backup of the New War of the Worlds. I cannot pinpoint what caused the intial problem. No lesson to be learned except that my old computer really sucked. Bad Video card, bad power supply, bad motherboard, bad ram. I had it on a really good surge protector, but something did or may have affected the complete system to have it fail so miserably. I will only build my computers from now on and never purchase a ready made machine again. My present computer is the 6th one I have built, so far so good. It might be good to check your ram occasionally to make sure it is up to par and matches the amount you've installed.Comment

If you have K-mart in Australia then American Imperialism and culture has gone too far, unless you guys started K-mart. Have you ever wondered if Walmart is Kmart's evil bigger twin, I wonder if they are related?Comment
