    with good burners so CHEAP
there's little point in even using a dvd-rom or combo(dvd-rom/cd burner) unless you
    COF(copy on the fly)
    -----reasons------
    more drain on power supply
    conflicts
degraded read/write performance from sharing ide cables

Getting Your Burner To Run DMA Rather Than PIO Mode

I just went through this problem myself.

Go on Google and do a search under "Changing DMA Mode." You'll find that you can go in and edit the Registry (be careful) and doing so fixes the problem. My Plextor PX-716A was running PIO and it's now running Ultra DMA Mode 3.

You can swap IDE cables around and flip-flop the Master-Slave relationship, but the Plextor folks said that this drive should work fine in either status. I've also read that you can also uninstall and then reinstall the IDE channel with the DVD burner - just make sure you don't uninstall the IDE channel with the bootable hard drive on it.

But the least messy way is to edit the Registry. I go into Advanced Settings periodically and make sure that the IDE channel is in DMA Mode. Otherwise, +-Rs coasters will result.

Also make sure to NOT install Intel Application Accelerator.

All of the above advice is what I picked up from other people on this and other forums. I don't want to take credit for somebody else's solution.

a SIMPLE fix... at least for me

If you follow the link below and scroll past all the hot fixes, registry tweaks
and updates there is a WORKAROUND that could not be simpler, faster or less risky:

Go to the Device Manager and uninstall the driver for the IDE controller
in question. Reboot and let XP reinstall the driver-- complete with default
        DMA settings.

This default often gets changed after the drive has had trouble reading a damaged disc...
which is exactly what had happened to me the day before my troubles began.
The troubles went away after I tried this trick.
