    My HDD crashed.......:(

My HDD crashed suddenly on Friday afternoon and although i revived it a bit and am currently working from the same(till the replacement arrives), but I was rendered useless for 2 days over the weekend.

Motto of the story is to keep backing up your Data, I had a 10 days old backup for this one, till I revived it and have the latest backup.

Although I always thought that laptop HDD failure is very rare but was proven wrong by this failure. :!

my 2nd hdd crashed a while ago (see the dual-core thread), due to a lightning storm. i lost a LOT of data, all of it video/movies. i had ~90% of it backed up anyway, so it wasn't too bad for me.

the drive is fine, ran the extensive test with data lifeguard tools, its in perfect condition, just suffered data corruption.

        it's true Chewy.
the real protection is "unplug" everything.

Always wondered if the S.M.A.R.T warning mechanism works. There is even a freeware program that will support it under Windows (as Windows don't support it by itself).

Anyone who used/is using this program?

doesn't s.m.a.r.t. warn at bootup if enabled?

Hmm, never tried it myself lately. Just curious if anybody used that feature.

You mean Star Wars? "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away" I have never had a hard drive crash, but I had Windows go corrupted once, because I manually shutdown the PC during spyware installation and screwed it up. I was able to do a repair install and retrieve all my data, then I reformatted the HD.
