Paging file size question

I have an associate at the new shop that does 1200 dpi scans of
8x10 photos then blows them up to ~ 4x6 foot for sign work
with adobe ps, file size is 800MB, applying filters he needs an extra gig.
He uses the 3500 winchester after frying the xp3200/400.

my file size goes up to ~20mb each image taken with my camera (as bmp). but during the editing stage, when working with multiple layers, that value can jump to over 200mb. the pic in my sig had a file size of ~80mb during editing
