    S/PDIF question

ive been looking up the net for some info on s/pdif,but havent found any answer on my question,so this is my last stop...
does anyone use s/pdif here and what for
can it be used to send audio instead of using "audio out" on my soundmax on integrated in my motherboard,as i use my stereo instead of small desktop speakers(i believe most of the people do the same)??

SPDIF is coaxial/RCA digital out (or in). A socket can only be out or in. My onboard sound has a SP/Dif out. I use it to send audio from DVD's in DD 5.1 and DTS 5.1 to my AV amp. The amplifier needs to have a SPDIF in to work. Most stereos will have just a red/ white RCA sockets. Only stereo or maybe Dolby Pro Logic can be heard from these.

Some computer hardware also have a SPDIF in which can be used to record sound. The opposite of a SPDIF is a optical digital conection (fibre optics).

The red/white are analogue and SPDIF is digital. red/white is just stereo sound and digital can be mono, stereo and full surround sound.
