to see if you really need that ram, open task manager and monitor page file use history, leave it open and then check back after starting your most intensive tasks

I would think the extra hard drive, when you learn how to use it, would be the best upgrade

thnx chewy. right now the page file is at 248mb steady, and my available ram is 225, leaving me w/289. i can't tell you if it was higher b4 using outlook, or switching to verizon. thing taking up most of ram is ashServ.exe, explorer.exe, firefox.exe, vsmon.exe, svchost.exe, ashWebSv.exe. i know it hasn't affeceted my video work. remember though i'm on the web right now.

p.s. tried searching forum 4 that auto-adjust n couldn't find anything. how do i turn it off? if it's relevant to my resource.

that durn avast software just about keeps windows from ever booting my daughter's computer

learn to turn it and zone alarm off when not surfing
it's also an accident waiting to happen when doing updates or running fixes or installing new software

just did some video work. page file history at read mode was 279mb-280mb steady, then it dropped to 242mb steady in write mode. that's about the most intensive work i do. 4 now anyway. really can't do too much w/512 ram n 80gb on this dell, so try to keep it as lean as possible. know what you mean about avast n also spybot which keeps adding new viruses to their list taking up more hd space lil by lil.

won't my pc b vulnerable if i turn off zone, and avast while not surfing? or very unlikely to catch anything when not browsing? my firewall would b off during that time.

my available ram is 336MB, page file 218MB and 20 processes open/running

i only have verizon's modem w/the yellow ethernet cable, and the other line that goes into the jack. unless verizon has a nat n router on their end 4 their is service i don't have 1.

you do have 1gb of ram on the pc you're talking about right? or just the 512?

it's that freaking zonealarm n avast. i just shut them off to check out the processes n performance. the processes went down to 19 n the available ram was about 312 or so. wow what a resource hog? any suggestions.

I had already tested some different ram but by the time I decided I needed the faster stuff to mesh with my overclock the matched sets of 256's were gone, they sold for about 90$, no one was buying the single sticks, the matched sets of 512's were about the same price 2 years ago, maybe higher, at one time they were 200$

that 46.3 of yours must not b available anymore huh? how did you know to go after this processor/ram? it is at the top?

yes that is my cpu. maybe that extra gig might b worth it after all. the 1 that is not 2. but 4 $20 bucks more can't go wrong. you could leave a slot open if you put new ram in right? like if i take my 2 256 out n put 1 gb in?
