Focus or tracking error ?

I have a plextor PX-716A that up until a day or two ago has worked great. The last couple days though, I have been unable to burn DVD's with it.

I'm using WinAVI to convert the video to DVD and burning withDVDShrink. I thought perhaps it was one of those two proggies causing the issue so I uninstalled-reinstalled DVDShrink and had the same problem. I went back and did a system restore to a point last week where I knew it worked, but that didn't fix it either.

In my DVDShrink error log towards the bottom I see this:

You think the"focus or tracking error" is the problem, and what does that typically mean ?

Suggestions or is it toast ?

A little update...

I reinstalled my Plextor firmware (1.09), ran a CD laser lens cleaner on the unit and tried to burn another DVD, but instead of setting DVDShrink burn speed at 4x, I set it at maximum and it worked. The discs are 4x, so I'm not sure what to think but will try a couple more and repost.

One thing though- I tried witrh Nerovision and had errors too, but agian that was set at 4x Instead of max. I wnder if the discs are inconsistant with the speed. I've burned 25 or so at 4x out of the same spindle.

I guess I won't after all. Nero vision shut down when I gotr home from work and didn't create a log for the burn.

Or- it appears that DVD Shrink did use Nero.

Well I spoke too soon. I tried another one with DVD Shrink and errored out. I created a ISO with DVD Shink and tired to burn that with Nero burning Rom, and that didn't work either.

some of crappiest of the crap media around. have you tried REAL media like a sony or verbatim disc? you have multiple errors there. did you need to shrink your project? you should burn manually with nero and try that. if you want the ISO i'd use dvd decrypter.

That I did not do. I have some TDK's here that I can try. How do they rate ? I've been using the cheepies from Office Max with good results for so long that perhaps I overlooked those.

I did successfully encode & burn a DVD overnight using Nero Vison 4, so this thing is not consistant.
