This is a new computer, why would it have compressed old files already and set up log files? Would it be safe to delete them or should i not bother with them ? I have plenty of space on my hard drives

alot of those OLD files are actually Windows files since it'll have the date those files were created going back several years now. After like 30 days Windows asks or tells you too compress those OLD files. Since XP has been bloated from contain tons and tons of files that you'll never use but its good or bad that they're there.
Basically comes in handy if you grab your old printer one day out of the closet and dust it off and slap it into your comp. Having those files uncompressed saves you a few seconds that it'd take for windows to uncompress those several files. Since those 3-4 sec's you save amount to soooo very much, considering it takes an easy minute to boot your PC you can understand the relevance of the whole Windows time continum
