CD and DVD Rom Problem

Hopefully somebody can help me with this problem. I just bought a new hard drive a few days ago and installed Windows Xp Pro with service pack 1. The problem I am having is that both my dvd rom/cd rw combo drive and my dvd burner won't auto start any disks now. If I put a disk in either drive the drive will blink to read the disk, it won't start the disk though or even show that a disk is in the drive if I goto my computer but if I double click or right click the drive I can open the disk that is in the drive so the drives are reading the disks. I have tried the info I have found on the net from microsoft about checking the registry and that was all set correct.

My computer info is as follows:

OS: Windows XP pro w/service pack 1
Motherboard : PCChips M848A
DVD Rom/CD-Rw Combo Drive : BTC Combo IDE5232CO
DVD Burner : Emprex Burner 16x
Hard Drives : Master(200 gig seagate) : Slave(40 gig western digital)
Processor : 2600+ AMD Sempron
Ram : 1.5 gigs PC 2700
Bios Type: AMI(07/15/04)
Motherboard Chipset : SIS 748

Also when I run a system analysis with Everest Home Edition it says that the accuracy of DMI data cannot be guaranteed and I'm not sure what that means and if that might be causing the problems or not. I really dont know what to do to fix this so hopefully somebody can lead me in the right direction. Any help on this will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

To enable autorun, click on START button and select "Run"

Type gpedit.msc

Do the following both in "Computer configuration" and in "user configuration"

1) Search for \administrative templates\system\

2) Left click on system and search "turn off autoplay"

3) Double click on "turn off autoplay" and select "Disabled"

In this way you have autorun enabled on all your drives.

But I suggest you to leave autorun disabled.

Regarding the other question, sorry, I'm not able to answer

Alright I tried what you suggested and they still won't auto play any disks I put in the drive. It will show the disk is in the drive now when I goto my computer but when I eject the disk the drive still says the disk is in there and if I put a different disk in it won't start that one cause it is still trying to read off the disk I ejected. It stays that way until I restart the computer. I never had this problem before I put XP pro on my system cause I have always used XP home until then. Any other ideas on how to maybe solve this. What other software have you installed since loading windows xp?

It is a fresh install of the hard drive since i just did it last weekend so I have installed:

Windows XP pro w/service pack 1
All windows updates from microsoft except service pack 2
The video drivers for my nvida mx4000 video card
the software that came with my motherboard since this is a home built system
Nero Burning rom 5 with the update to version 5.5
Power dvd 5
and the disk wizard that came with my hard drive since windows will only allot 130 gigs of a hard drive
DVD shrink and AOL
Plus Norton Anti virus and spybot seek and destroy

thats all thats on my system right now.

too old, bad idea!

The way you clean install or load a computer is load xp sp1, then apply sp2 then go into device manager and get rid of any problematic devices by loading the newest updated hardware drivers(only those needed)

A lot of mobo cd's were intended for Win xp original, they are obsolete and
should be thrown away.

If at first you don't succeed/ try try again!

Since this is a fresh install and there isnt much on here right now i will try that and see if that fixes the problem. Do you have any info on the accuracy of DMI that Everest Home Edition says as a warning? Is that A bios problem or something else. Thank you so much for the help.

I just wanted to say thank you very much for all your help. I did as you suggested and did a re-install doing xp then service pack 1 then service pack 2 not installing the drivers on the motherboard disk and everything works great now. Thank you again for taking your time to help me on this matter. Without your help I'd still be looking all around the net for possible fixes banging my head on the wall.

I am glad that worked, been there and done that recently, I banged my head for quite some time. Nothing like first hand experience, and a very sore head.
