Firewire question

I am a beginner setting up my computer with movie making software for the first time. I know absolutly nothing at this point. So I have been told I will need a firewire card and also on the software it says I need to connect my camcorder to the computer by plugging a cable into ( I cant remember off hand the numbers but it begins with 1EEE and then four or so numbers ). Is this 1EEE**** card and a firewire card the same thing ?
And if they are not the same thing, do I still need both or one or the other ?

I have another question about fire wire. Do you have to physicly put the card inside the computer or you just plug out side? I am thinking of moving from USB to fire wire for my burner.

its a pci card, the slot will be in the back
